Black Hawk Hiking Club

Activities

The Black Hawk Hiking Club's yearly activity begins on the first week of each November.
All regular Saturday hikes begin promptly at 2:30pm.
If bringing a pet, you will be required to sign a waiver.

Regular Saturday hikes
Each hike has a committee of several people who share in the preparation and execution of the event. Responsibilities often include:
1. A leader for a long hike and a leader for a short hike. A long hike is typically two hours long.
2. A "tail" member to make sure everyone stays with the group.
3. One or two members stay at the hike rally point to prepare beverages appropriate for the climate and greet latecomers. Additional snack items are sometimes supplied by members. Committee members share the cost for beverage supplies, but not for optional snacks.

Weekend Overnight hikes
There are several of these during the year and they offically begin with a hike at 2:30 on Saturday and end on Sunday after a morning hike. It's common for some members to arrive early Friday afternoon, camp that night, and prepare their own meals for that period. Each weekend involves considerable planning for at least two hikes plus three meals prepared on site. At Sunday breakfast, members prepare a sack lunch to consume after the morning hike or on their travel back home. All attending members are assigned a duty in meal preparation and cleanup on a rotating basis. Sign up and fees are necessary well in advance to facilitate planning, preparation and making campground reservations.

Annual Big Hike
This is similar to a Weekend Overnight, but on a larger scale lasting for at least one week which includes travel of approximately one day each way. Sign up and fees are necessary well in advance to facilitate planning, preparation and making campground reservations. Conditions permiting, there is at least one scheduled hike each day with the exception of one "free" day when members are on their own. Often there are local attractions within short travel.

Annual Chicken Supper
This event follows a regular Saturday hike and includes a catered meal served at a comfortable facility followed by a guest speaker who's subject is related in some way to the use and presevation of nature. Sign up and fees are necessary well in advance to facilitate planning and preparation.

Annual Banquet
This event does not include a hike, but is somewhat formal. It includes a catered meal served at a quality facility followed by a guest speaker. Sign up and fees are necessary well in advance to facilitate planning and preparation.

Annual Business Meeting
As the name suggests, this is an important meeting where policy and specific issues are discussed and if necessary voted on. Following the meeting is a potluck meal.
